Oktoberfest: The History and What to Wear

Posted by Tartanista on 22nd Sep 2022

Oktoberfest is a 16- to 18-day Germanic folk festival which occurs annually from mid- to late-September until the end of the first week of October annually (hence the name), in which participants famously drink beer, and includes food, dancing, and parades. Many participants wear kilts to attend due to the Celtic roots of the festival and its participants, and so it is a perfect occasion to don a Tartanista outfit. It is held all over the world, but the original Oktoberfest is held in Munich, Bavaria, Germany.

Oktoberfest is said to have originated as a royal celebration. When King Ludwig I married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in October 1810, the citizens of Munich were invited to celebrate in the fields in front of the city gates, the celebrations including horse races and a parade. The decision to repeat the festivities in the following year is what is said to have begun the tradition of Oktoberfest, although horse races are no longer a part of it.

Oktoberfest is still extremely popular and celebrations are held worldwide. In the German tradition, women wear dirndl dresses and men wear lederhosen, but many people opt to wear tartan kilts to honour their Celtic heritage. We recommend wearing a kilt in the tartan of your choice, as well as a sporran to keep belongings in, so you don't lose anything after a few tankards of beer. We also have great Ghillie shirts to match, if you want to complete the look.
